11 Dec I Found Solace in Pilates
We have asked some real people to discuss how Pilates has helped shape their body, sports performance, and day-to-day strength.
Here, Natalie Cheng – 22 years old, fresh out of college, and can’t get enough of running, rock climbing and water-skiing – explains how and why she took to this tried and tested practice.
Why?
I originally started exploring Pilates as a corrective exercise to counteract backaches and postural issues. However, over the years, I’ve found that it has helped me in more ways than I ever expected. I love all the sports that I do, however unfortunately for my body this means picking up more muscle tightness and back-strains.
I found my solace in Pilates – the studio is a place for me to release all the tightness and stress I have built up over the week, and simultaneously target muscles that need extra attention and strengthening. I see Pilates as a regenerating engine that allows me to keep doing the activities that I love.
Without Pilates, I think I’d be a bundle of knots!
Your body awareness now?
Pilates has given me a good perspective about how my body should ideally work. Armed with that awareness, I try to keep in mind the things my body ought to be doing, whenever I can.
I definitely have a much stronger sense of how my body connects and works together under different situations. I now know the simplest ways to maintain good posture and avoid what’s bad for my physical health.
Best benefit from the practice?
My renewed awareness of my body structure – I have learned where I am weakest and what I can do to counterbalance. I would like to thank my Pilates instructors Evelyn and Nicole who have been patient and spent time helping me through every class.
Pilates is a very special and personal understanding that one doesn’t get from many disciplines.
