Poor posture and the sedentary nature of modern life has a huge impact on how our bodies function and move.
Yamuna® Body Rolling (YBR) is growing in popularity across Asia, Europe and the US and is acknowledged for its ability to prevent injury and heal those areas of the body that are most prone to the wear and tear of modern life.
So what is Yamuna® Body Rolling and what areas of the body does it target and treat?
Yamuna® Body Rolling is a holistic bodywork method which was developed by New York based Yamuna Zake in the 1990s and uses a combination of ball rolling, therapeutic exercises and deep breathing techniques to cultivate sustainable change in the body.
YBR can enhance flexibility by improving joint mobility and muscle elasticity, boost circulation by stimulating blood flow and lymphatic drainage and help remove toxins from the body.
Flex Studio Singapore is proud to host the country’s first YBR teacher training which will be co-presented by acclaimed YBR practitioners Satoshi Suzuki and Mika Childs.
Yamuna Japan’s founder Satoshi Suzuki, a US trained Athletic Trainer and rehabilitation specialist who has worked with the Japanese Rugby League, discovered YBR when searching for ways to reduce injury and boost performance in athletes in particular.
Satoshi is also trained in Yamuna Body Logic, one of only ten people globally with this certification and the only one in Asia.
Satoshi will co-present the workshops with Mika Childs, a prominent YBR practitioner with more than 15 years’ experience in the field and who qualified as Hong Kong’s first certified YBR instructor in 2010.
Satoshi believes YBR is key to preventing injuries and promotes a holistic approach to wellbeing that incorporates both the physical and mental.
“YBR works to align the skeletal structure to promote smooth movement and stimulates the cells that directly form bone to enhance bone quality,” he explains.
“Many chronic injuries are due to bad alignment which can put stress and pressure on the joints and muscles,” he says.
“Yamuna® Body Rolling has a unique ability to change structures for efficient movement and therefore prevent injuries.”
He says when the body succumbs to the gravitational pull of its own weight, the bone positions become misaligned. Misaligned bones mean twisted or displaced joints which can then become unbalanced and start to break down.
This, he says, is because when bones are misaligned, the muscles attached to them also get twisted, creating a vicious cycle that further stresses the joints. Only when bones and muscles are in their naturally designed positions can movements be smooth and safe.
Satoshi says Yamuna® Body Rolling can prevent a range of body issues and conditions and help us maintain physical condition as we age.
Another of YBR great advantages, he says, is that it can be done alone.
“Unlike many other body care methods that require treatment or guidance from a therapist or trainer every time, YBR can be a self-care method you can perform anytime and anywhere, as long as you understand the correct technique and have a ball. Moreover, by practicing it yourself, your body awareness will improve dramatically.”
“If you run, dance, lift, hike, swim, and bike, you should start YBR now so you can continue doing your favourite activities without pain or injury.”
Acclaimed Japanese YBR Trainer and Practitioner Satoshi Suzuki helps us identify some of the key focus areas where Yamuna® Body Rolling is beneficial.
Face:
Align Your Facial “Structure” for Natural Beauty from Within.
Face Saver is a revolutionary facial care method that goes beyond the skin, targeting and stimulating the bones of the face to realign them and activate dormant muscles. It enhances blood circulation and skin firmness, lifting a face that has sagged due to gravity. This approach not only alleviates various stressors affecting the face but may also provide relief from conditions like TMJ disorders and eye strain. It’s a completely new, logical, and effective way to care for your face.
Shoulders:
We usually use arms in front of us, so our shoulders are pulled forward and down, creating hunched back postures. Using computers and phones intensively these days, we are putting so much stress on hands, arms, and shoulders more than ever. If we keep using shoulders in those positions, we create stiff neck, reduced ROM and eventually frozen shoulders (rotator cuff tendonitis). Yamuna® Body Rolling works to lift entire torso upward from abdominal to chest and open shoulders and arms outward by working the both outer and inner muscles from its origins to insertions.
Pelvis:
Pelvis is the base for internal organs but we tend to collapse our upper body down into pelvis, putting much pressure to not only our organs but also lower back. People think strong abdominal is good for lower back issues, so they work hard on ab. However, if they shorten the space in between rib cage and pelvis, their organs are pushed and loose functions sooner or later. Lower back is also squished creating hernia. Yamuna® Body Rolling creates appropriate space and foundation for organs by resetting each pelvis and toning and lengthening abdominal, back, and hip muscles.
Feet:
Awaken Your Foot Bones and Muscles for Smoother Walking.
By using Foot Wakers to stimulate the outer, central, and inner parts of your soles, you can enhance the flexibility of your feet and activate the bones and muscles that haven’t been utilized. Foot fitness helps restore natural movement by creating space for each bone in the feet, which are the “foundation” of the entire body. By mastering the correct walking technique, you can enjoy comfortable walking and prevent issues such as bunions and knee pain.
Spine:
Spine could be the most important part for body rolling because it stores spinal cord from brain, connecting to entire body parts. We use a ball and work up each side of spine from sacrum to skull. By lifting each vertebrae and stimulating each nerve root, we align posture and improve nervous system. Creating inter vertebra spaces helps reducing back, shoulders, and neck problems.
