Breaking Stereotypes – Emmanuel talks about the benefits of Pilates for men

Posted on November 6, 2024

November is here, and at Flex Studio, we’re focusing on men’s health in support of Movember. This month we talk to a regular client of Flex Studio Emmanuel.

“Pilates came to my life, if I may say so, when I was doing a lot of outdoor and more cardio activities. And, you know, one day a friend told me, well, why don’t you try Pilates? Because maybe, you know, it would help you with stretching, flexibility, and be a bit more complementary to what you’re already doing. And this is how I started Pilates.”

A Personal Journey into Pilates

Emmanuel who has since relocated to Singapore, shares his transformative experience with Classical Pilates. Initially focused on outdoor and cardio activities, he was encouraged by a friend to try Pilates to improve stretching and flexibility. He quickly realized that Pilates was an excellent complement to his existing fitness routine. During his first sessions, he discovered muscles he had never been aware of, which opened his eyes to the depth of physical awareness that Pilates fosters.

Core Strength and Body Awareness

The philosophy of Classical Pilates canters around core strength and mindful movement. This focus is not only beneficial during workout sessions but also impacts daily activities such as standing, sitting, and moving. Many men may feel intimidated by the variety of equipment available—reformers, mats, chairs—but soon learn that each tool serves a specific purpose in enhancing their workout experience. The consistent quality of instruction at Flex Studio provided him with a sense of comfort and stability in his practice.

Progress Through Consistency

One of the key factors that kept him engaged in Pilates was the combination of consistency and diversity in the exercises offered. Unlike other fitness regimes where participants might struggle to keep up with varying difficulty levels, Pilates allows for personalized adjustments based on individual capabilities. This adaptability made it easier for him to progress without feeling overwhelmed.

Initially skeptical about his flexibility, he found that over time, he became more aware of his body’s capabilities. He noticed gradual improvements in his ability to bend and move, which contributed to better posture and overall physical performance. The satisfaction derived from witnessing these changes reinforced his commitment to the practice.

Choosing the Right Studio

Emmanuel explains when selecting a Pilates studio, it’s crucial for men to find instructors who provide consistent and tailored guidance. Unlike many sports that require participants to catch up with different skill levels, Pilates adapts to individual’s needs. This personalized approach allows men to push themselves at their own pace while benefiting from a structured routine.

Emmanuel also emphasized that not all studios are created equal; the quality of instruction can greatly influence one’s experience. At Flex Studio, he appreciated the depth of training provided by instructors, which allowed him to explore various movements without feeling lost or intimidated.

An Invitation for Men

Men are often hesitant to engage in Pilates due to preconceived notions about its suitability for them. However, it’s essential to approach this practice with an open mind. The adaptability of Pilates means it caters to any body type or fitness level, making it an inclusive form of exercise.

Moreover, it’s important to remember that Joseph Pilates — a man with a background in martial arts, bodybuilding, and boxing. His system was designed to strengthen the body holistically. Engaging in Pilates can lead not only to improved physical fitness but also enhanced mental well-being.

As Movember encourages men to take charge of their health through awareness and action, incorporating Pilates into one’s fitness routine can be a transformative step. Men should not shy away from this practice; instead, they should recognize its potential to improve their physical capabilities and overall well-being.

Let’s break down the stereotypes surrounding men’s fitness and encourage more men to engage in practices like Pilates that promote longevity, holistic health and reducing premature male mortality.

Flex Studio invites all men to join in this initiative during November. By participating in Classical Pilates classes, to experience firsthand the benefits of improved strength, flexibility, and balance while contributing to a broader movement aimed at enhancing men’s health globally.
