Find Empowerment on Your yoga Mat

Step on to the mat in the middle of a challenging day and the world stills. Take a deep breath and the spirit rejoices, the mind calms and the body gets ready for a challenge. Yoga is one of the most empowering practices you can choose. Teaching discipline and self-control, but also awareness and awakening, feel your stress ebb away, your life focus sharpen and your confidence soar. As BKS Iyengar wrote in Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, “Yoga is an art, a science and a philosophy. It is a practical method for making one’s life purposeful, useful and noble.” Flex’s instructors explain here how they believe yoga empowers.

Kelsea: Yoga is empowering because it’s just you, alone, on your mat, in control of your own actions.

Dr Abhishek: I think yoga is the only way to empower yourself.

Charlotte: “Yoga is for everybody. As Krishnamacharya said, “If you can breathe, you can do yoga.” Yoga is not about what you can’t do, it is about what you can do; yoga is not about looking amazing, it is about feeling amazing.

Dr Abhishek: Yoga requires lots of personal practice, discipline and adherence to its principles. For many people it is hard to even get through the initial stages of yoga, of asan (poses) and pranayama (breathing).

Kelsea: A reason I love yoga is because it’s hard; it challenges my mind by pushing my body beyond its limits. And it’s very empowering when you reap the benefits of your own hard work.

Kelsea: Yoga requires a certain level of discipline, both on the mat and during your day-to-day life. It’s incredible to see what your body is capable of when you’re focused, challenged and determined to do something. This discipline results in increased confidence and the belief that you can do anything when you set your mind to it.

Jessica: Yoga is empowering because it teaches us that we all have the capacity to remain conscious during situations that would normally cause us to respond in a reactionary way. This gives us the power to move beyond our habitual patterns while creating a greater sense of awareness within our selves.

Heloise: Yoga means union; the union of mind, body and spirit.
When you recognize that you have the power to direct your life, that you are the lord and master of your own universe, life starts to look a little more different. The awakening is the beginning of the empowerment process of yoga.

Dr Abhishek: The four yogic parameters are the tools with which to master the asan and to awaken the inherent psychic power. Thereafter comes the self-realisation.

Michelle: Yoga empowers us to feel, breathe, live and love.

Charlotte: Yoga empowers us to understand that we all have the capacity to find true strength, freedom, wellness, happiness and joy as it lies within us all…

… So when we step onto the mat we step into our own truth.
